William L. “Bill” Akers, age 79, of Ashley, died Sunday, December 13, 2015, at Ashley Care Center, with his family at his side.

Bill was born August 7, 1936 in McDonough County, Illinois, the son of John Clinton and Rosa Alice (Cox) Akers.  He went to trade school at the age of 15 and learned welding.  He married Nelda Elaine Mills on January 7, 1967 in Ithaca.  He worked overseas for Chicago Bridge and Iron, and later throughout Michigan.  Bill and Nelda settled in the Ashley area as he started working construction through the local union, before starting his own businesses with Akers Welding and Akers Waste Removal.  He enjoyed making belt buckles in his spare time, as well as going down to Illinois to visit his family.  He really enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren, as well as having coffee with the local farmers.

Bill is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nelda; his children, Doris (Cedric) Patmon of Ithaca and Jason (Aubree) Akers of Ashley; his grandchildren, Macie Akers, Roman Patmon, Bryn Akers, Reid Patmon, and Teagan Akers; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers and sisters, David Akers, Hazel Thomas, Junior Akers, Robert Akers, and Alleyne Akers.

Funeral services will be 11am Wednesday, December 16, at the Ithaca Church of God, with Pastor Tom Whitesel officiating.  Interment will follow in North Star Cemetery.  Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 15, at Barden Funeral Home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Ithaca Church of God or to Ashley Care Center.  Condolences may be left for the family online at www.bardenfuneralhome.com.
