Roy "Tom" Bates age 84 of Chapin, Michigan died on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Memorial Healthcare Center, Owosso, Michigan.
Funeral services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Sunday March 12, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. Pastor Ed Snook will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be on Friday, 6-8 P.M. and Saturday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.
Tom was born in Chapin Township, Michigan on March 7, 1922, the son of VanRoe & Maude Susan (Simpson) Bates, he resided most of his life in the Chapin, Michigan area. He married Shirley Elsworth in Duplain Township, Michigan on July 15, 1944, she survives him. He farmed and formerly worked construction for Reed & Noyce Construction, Lansing, Michigan. He enjoyed hunting and his friends and neighbors. He was a life member of the Old Gas Tractor Association.
Survivors include his daughter, Carrie & Allen Baron of Owosso, Michigan, 2 sons, Jerry Bates of Chapin, Michigan, and Clay Bates of Arizona, 6 grandchildren & 9 great grandchildren, 1 sister, Orpha Gutzmer of Chesaning, Michigan and many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, 1 son, Thomas J., 1 sister Freda Gill, and 1 brother, Bill Bates.
Memorial may be made to a charity of the donora�(TM)s choice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
