Richard (Dick) Ayre Lumsden Iii

d. September 5, 2016

Richard A. Lumsden, age 93, of Ithaca, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 5, 2016, at Woodland Hospice in Mt. Pleasant.

Dick was born in Emerson Township on April 24, 1923, the son of Richard Ayre Lumsden, Jr. and Edith Snedecor.  He graduated from Ithaca High School and served his country during WWII in the South Pacific as a US Marine from May 19, 1941 to October 24, 1945.  He was self-employed, providing automotive care and repair supplies for many years.  He loved “going down the road” to see his customers.

Dick's church family and his Lord were so important to him; that was so evident.  He served on the Prison Ministry and the Keryx Team until this last year.  For several years he enjoyed singing with the Men's Chorus at Ithaca United Methodist Church.

His love of community showed in his local service.  He was a member of the Ithaca Fire Department for over 25 years, 9 of which he served as Fire Chief.  He also helped build three Habitat for Humanity houses.

Dick loved the outdoors. Grand Marais was a favorite place to camp with family.  He loved being in the woods, and enjoyed numerous years hunting near Newberry with Steve.  There were many special vacations and gatherings with family.

Dick also enjoyed riding his bike in various bike-a-thons; and for ten years rode in the Dalmac.

Dick is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marilyn; and their combined families: Phillip (Vicki) Lumsden of Houghton Lake, Steve (Bonnie) Wolfgang of Newberry, Christine (Russell) Roberts of Williamsburg, KY, Mary (Henry) Kubin of St. Louis, and Betty (Chuck) Wakefield of Stanton; their grandchildren: Sean Phillip Lumsden, Jeffrey (Maria) Wolfgang, Ben Wolfgang, Jacob Sowers, Christian Sowers, Becca Andrews (Jason) Jasinski, and Amy Roberts (Jonathan) Bowman; great-grandchildren: Nora and Corbin Wolfgang, Brianne Wolfgang, Logan and Taylor Sowers, and Easton Bowman; his brothers Don (Donna) Lumsden and Walter Lumsden; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Marshall Lumsden, Norman Lumsden, and Robert Lumsden; his sisters; Margaret Jane Lumsden and Carol Lumsden Sikkila Kelly; his sisters-in-law:  Sandra Lumsden and Colleen Lumsden; and his step-son, Robert Wolfgang.  Dick loved all of his family so much.

There will be a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the Ithaca United Methodist Church, with Pastor Gary Simmons officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service.  Interment is in Ithaca Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Ithaca United Methodist Church Building Fund, Gratiot County Commission on Aging, or to Woodland Hospice in Mt. Pleasant.  The Lumsden family is being served by the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca.
