Nyle D. Clawson, age 91, formerly of rural Ithaca, died Sunday, September 24, at Masonic Pathways in Alma.

Nyle was borne in Lafayette Township, on the family farm, on May 10, 1926, the son of Clayton Wheeler and Alta Mae (Holmes) Clawson.  He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1944, and enlisted in the Marines, serving in Europe at the end of WWII.  He married Barbara Jane Patterson  She preceded him in death in 1966.  He worked for 37 years in insurance claims.

Nyle loved planes.  He first rode in a crop duster, and eventually received his private pilots license.  He enjoyed traveling to visit his grandchildren, and to see friends in different parts of the states.  His roots were anchored in the Lafayette Presbyterian Church, where several generations of his family had attended, and where he had taught Sunday school.

Nyle is survived by his daughters, Lucia (Mark) MacNabb of St. Louis and Barbara (Larry) Brown of Oneonta, Alabama; 8 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and his sister, Emma Lee Street.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dan; his daughter, Ruth Davenport; and his sister, Evelyn Gross.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 28, at the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca, with Pastor Steve Swem officiating.  Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Alma.  There will be a luncheon at the Lafayette Presbyterian Church.  Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. until the start of the service.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Ithaca Food Pantry.  Condolences may be left for the family online at www.bardenfuneralhome.com.
