Marvin Jay Shaw, 73 of St. Johns went to be with his Lord on Monday, July 11, 2011, in Lansing, Michigan. Marvin was born February 9, 1938 in rural Ithaca, Michigan, Gratiot County, son of Oliver Fay and Leona Shaw. He married Corrine McMaster on October 17, 1959 in Breckenridge, Michigan. He is survived by his children, two daughters Marvelann (Gerald) Erskine of Perrinton, Charlotte (Jason) Hetherington of St. Johns, and one son Milan (Teresa) Shaw of Kernersville, North Carolina. Marvin and Corrine made their first home in Lansing, Michigan. They moved to rural Ithaca in 1964 and to Eureka in 1976 where they resided until the death of Corrine in June 2008. Marvin attended the East Washington United Brethren Church. He contributed to the church through his music and singing, and was sometimes called a “walking hymnal.” Marvin was employed at the Lansing General Motors Fisher Body Plant for 33 years, where he worked various jobs including spot welding in the pit, B-Trim painting and assignments in environmental services. Upon retirement in 1991, he worked at Bob Evans Restaurant in Dewitt for seven years. Marvin loved to hunt and fish, especially for blue gill on Crystal Lake in his small wooden fishing boat. He also enjoyed using his chain saw to cut wood. He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1957 where he played a cornet horn in the band and was a member of the 4-H Club. At the club he participated in the calf scramble where he roped a steer, cared for it one year and then sold it. His first car was purchased with the money earned. Marvin knew no strangers and loved everyone. He was proud to introduce his family to everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his wife Corrine, his parents, and oldest brother Orval Shaw. He is survived by three brothers Carl, Glenn and Robert Shaw and one sister Gaytha Tuttle. He loved his five grandchildren and is survived by Steven and Julia Erskine, Heidi (Shaw) Ledford, Amber and Aron Hetherington, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 13, 2011 from 2 PM 8 PM at Barden’s Funeral Home in Ithaca. The funeral will be 10AM, Thursday, July 14 at East Washington Church in Ashley, interment to follow at North Star Cemetery.
