John Mitchell

John Gary Mitchell, age 85, of Frankfort , MI , formerly of Gaines Township , Michigan , passed away on August 4, 2021 at Frankfort Pines, Frankfort , Michigan .

John Gary Mitchell was born on Feb. 2, 1936 .  His parents were George and Myrtle Mitchell. He had one sister, Francis GeorgeAnn (Wing).  John graduated from Ashley High School in 1954.  He was a proud alumni of Central Michigan University where he obtained his teaching degree.  On August 17, 1957 he married Dorothy Naomi Peters after meeting her at a church youth group.

John was an Industrial Arts teacher at Swartz Creek High School from where he retired in 1991. He was active for many years assisting with drama club, musical productions as well as many other school activities. John also taught drivers training for many summers. He enjoyed woodworking, coin collecting, rock collecting (Petoskey stones), and ceramics.  His family will treasure the many hand crafted items that are sure to spark fond memories and conversations.

John is survived by Dorothy Naomi (Peters) Mitchell, his wife of 65 years, his 4 children: Christopher Jon Mitchell (Terry), Sheila Ann "Sam" Cagle (Craig), Lisa Lynne Carpenter (Rich) and Scott George Mitchell (Susan); his grandchildren Alyssa, Christopher (Breanna), Keith, Sarah, Corbin, Cole, and Jonah; and his new great-grandchild Christopher Jon III.

A private graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan, on Saturday August 7, 2021, with Pastor Doug Strait officiating.  Online condolences can be made at www.smithfamilyfuneralhomes.com.  The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie , MI .
