James “Jim” Johnson, lovingly nicknamed “Chuck” by his children, of St. Louis, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, after a life filled with love, hard work, and adventure.
Funeral Services will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Alma, MI, at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 10, 2025, with Pastor John Eich officiating.       Born on July 8, 1943, to Harry Fred Johnson and Marian Frances (Erwin) Johnson, Jim grew up on a farm alongside his brother, Erwin, and sister, Ruth. His love for the land and rural life led him to Michigan State University, where he earned an Associate degree in Agriculture. On August 12, 1967, Jim married the love of his life, Kathleen Carol Ross at Zion Lutheran Church, St. Louis. Together, they raised five children and built a life rooted in love, laughter, and devotion.
Jim worked at Michigan Livestock for 13 years, followed by roles at the local grain elevator and a spring fertilizer company. After graduating from Michigan State, he purchased his own farm, where he raised hogs and crops while also lending a hand to his lifelong friend and fellow farmer, Lowell Anderson. Later in life, Jim earned an Associate degree in Accounting from Davenport College and completed his career working with St. Louis Public Schools.
Jim was a man of many talents and a generous spirit, always ready to help those around him. After retirement, he found joy in woodworking, creating a well-loved workshop where he spent countless hours crafting. He also had a deep love of reading and spent many quiet hours with a good book in hand.
Jim and Kathy shared a passion for travel, visiting 48 states together, as well as Spain, Germany, Morocco, and Canada. He especially cherished their time in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and fondly remembered walking beneath the falls at Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan.
Jim and Kathy also opened their hearts and home to five foreign exchange students over the years, enriching their family’s life with cultural experiences, lasting connections, and lifelong friendships.
A devoted member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Jim lived his life guided by faith, kindness, and a deep love for his family. He was a proud husband, father, and grandfather, treasuring time with his seven grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife Kathy, their five children: Suzy (Brian) Robinson, James (Ursula) Johnson II, Jon (Stephanie) Johnson, Kortney (Shawn) Trahey, and Kari (Gabe) Rodriguez; seven grandchildren: Darienne, Jayden, and Trevin Robinson, Lauren and Samuel Johnson, and Johnny and Hudson Rodriquez; his brother Erwin Johnson, sister Ruth (Gary) Rickard, and many dear family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Lynn.
