Jack Lincoln Humm

Dr. Jack Lincoln Humm was born in Beebe Michigan on February 12, 1927 (Lincoln’s birthday) to Orba and Ruth Humm.  Jack grew up on a farm in the Sickles area with his parents, his sister Marceline and brother Duane.  He graduated from Ithaca High School and was quickly drafted into the US Army on June 20, 1945, stationed stateside in Fort Meade, Maryland until November 1946.  Jack attended Alma collage graduating in January 1951 with a B.S. and a teaching certificate.  He had a short 5-month stint teaching in Kinde, Michigan while waiting to get into the University of Michigan Dental School, from which he graduated in 1955 and immediately started practicing in Ithaca, Michigan.  He retired from Dentistry in 1995.

Jack married Helen Kathleen Andrews on September 17, 1955 and together they raised three children: Bill, Avis and Mary.

Jack was heavily involved in the Ithaca community throughout his adult life.  He served on the School Board, the Senior Activity Building Board, and the Gratiot County Historical & Genealogical Society Board.  Jack along with his wife Kathleen were responsible for developing the Gratiot County Historical Museum through the County Historical Society and served as its curators for 24 years.  Jack was also very proud to be a member of the Ithaca Rotary Club and served with perfect attendance for all of his 60 years of membership. He loved and lived the motto of the club: “Service above Self”.  Jack loved old cars, flowers, making candy, his home, his church, family and friends.  He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and was very grateful for his life with his wife Kathleen.

Jack is survived by his wife Kathleen Humm, son Bill Humm (wife Anh), daughter Avis Calhoun (husband Blair), daughter Mary Humm; grandchildren Ethan Humm, Avery Calhoun and Siobhan Calhoun; sister -in law Jo Anne Peet, Brother-in law Ijinio Zamarippa and many nieces and nephews.  Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Orba and Ruth Humm, sister Marceline Zamarippa, brother Duane Humm and grandson Anthony Calhoun.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 13 from 3 – 5pm and funeral on Monday the 14 at 11am, both at Barden’s Funeral Home in Ithaca.  Burial will follow the funeral at the Fritz cemetery on Hayes Rd. which will be followed by a luncheon at and provided by the Pompeii United Methodist Church, 135 Burton St. in Pompeii.

In leiu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Gratiot County Historical Museum, the Ithaca Senior Activities Building, and the Gratiot County Commission on Aging.
