Howard Mercer

Howard Lee Mercer, age 89, of Elsie, MI, passed away Friday, September 13, 2019, at his home.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, MI, at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, with Pastor Ava Williams officiating. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Howard was born in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on January 27, 1930, the son of Walter J. Mercer and Alpha (Motter) Mercer.  Howard married Irene B. Fountain in Remus, MI on October 24, 1953.

Howard retired from General Motors after 37 years of service in 1990. He liked hunting, fishing and tinkering with lawn mowers. He enjoyed the outdoors and riding on his golf cart. He loved visits with his family, friends and coworkers. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Occupation of Japan.

He is survived by his wife Irene Mercer of Elsie, MI; son Mark and Mary Mercer of St. Johns, MI; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brother Duane Mercer, of Farwell, MI.  He was preceded in death by his parents, son Ricky Leroy Mercer, 3 sisters, and 5 brothers.
