Gordon Wayne Stewart, age 88, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026, at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Clinton, St. Johns, MI.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes - Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, May 22, 2026, with Pastor Anthony Lange officiating. Burial will take place at South Bingham Township Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Friday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Wayne was born in Caro, Michigan on June 29, 1937, the son of Marvin and Monique (Hall) Stewart. He married the love of his life, Brenda Lou Whitford on December 24, 1965, in Owosso, MI. Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Marines from July 1953 until July 1957. Semper Fi. He was a member of the St. Johns American Legion. He retired from Consumers Energy after 38 years of service. After retirement, he worked with Clinton County RESA as a bus driver. The children he worked with held a special place in his heart.
Wayne loved tending to his yard and keeping his car clean. He had a 62 Cadillac in powder blue that he attended many car shows with. He enjoyed antiquing and was a collector of many things including: M&M's, die cast cars and depression glass. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with the Canze family and many others.
He was proud of his grandchildren and always supported them in their lives, including his granddaughter Ashleigh's time in the service. His great-grandchildren brought so much joy to his life and his wisdom and guidance will continue on throughout their lives.
Wayne will be remembered for his humor, compassion, kindness, his love for people and willingness to help anyone without being asked.
He is survived by his wife Brenda Stewart; daughter Christine and Fred Motz, daughter Kelly and Gary Riley, daughter Wanda and Marty Cleary, daughter Cheryl Zarth, and son Karl Stewart; his sister Dorothy Ann Swerline and brother Jerry Stewart. He is also survived by grandchildren: Zack and Hannah Lange, Danielle and Rob Bild, Jake and Bret Lange, Ashleigh and Kolton Nading, Carson Motz, Chloe Riley, Emma Riley and great-grandchildren: Bentley, Rosalie, Claire, Spencer, Olivia, Whitley, Theodore, Gianna, Gentry, Jameson, and Josephine. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, sister May Marcell and his grandparents.
