Frederick Jerome "Fred" Wood

     Frederick Jerome “Fred” Wood, age 80, of Pewamo, MI, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at his home.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo, MI at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, December 12, 2022, with Rev. Fr. Darrel Kempf presiding.  Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Pewamo, MI.  Visitation will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Goerge Chapel, Fowler, Michigan, on Sunday, December 11, 2022, from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

     Frederick was born in St. Johns, Michigan, on December 6, 1942, the son of Donald and Mary Ann (Cook) Wood.  He was a graduate of Pewamo High School.

     Fred grew up on the farm that he later purchased and farmed his entire life.  He was a pilot and owned his own planes.  He was always self-employed looking for new adventures.  Fred and Joann owned and operated Wood's Deli in Pewamo.  He also owned and operated a gravel pit in Pewamo. Fred enjoyed spending time at Houghton Lake, in Arizona, and Florida.  He loved fishing, hunting, riding his Harley, playing cards and telling his version of any story.  There were always people visiting him at their home in his basement.  He was a member and founder of a local deer camp that will remain unnamed.  Fred was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo.  He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.

     He was an avid golfer, and he even predicted the hole in one he got!  He said, “If it doesn’t go in, I’m quitting golfing.”  He was a lifetime member at Huckleberry Creek Golf Course in Pewamo, MI.

     He is survived by his wife Joann Wood of Pewamo, MI; son Steve and Brenda Wood of Pewamo, MI; daughter Jackie and Tim Nurenberg of  Pewamo, MI; son Ron and Selina Wood of Pewamo, MI; nine grandchildren: Rachel (Clinton) Korneffel, Erica (Evan) Foresman, Jason (Rebecca) Wood, Alyssa Nurenberg, Nicki Wood, Katelyn Wood, Dakota Nurenberg, Sara Wood, and Zachary Wood; great-granddaughter, Amelia Korneffel; sister, Kathy Grantz of Shelby, MI; sister Jenny Shangraw of Grand Rapids, MI; brother Mike and Kathy Wood, of Westphalia, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill Wood and sister, Patti McCrea.
